Head Coach - 2nd Season

Hannes, a former standout player at the University of Northern Iowa, enters her second season at Cornell guiding the men’s and women’s tennis programs.

Hannes, a native of Sao Paulo, Brazil, came to the Hilltop after two successful seasons as a women’s assistant at NCAA Division I San Jose State University. She also spent time as an assistant at Northern Arizona University (women, 2011 fall semester) and Western New Mexico University (men and women, 2009-11).

Hannes is glad to be back in the Hawkeye State.

“This is a great and exciting opportunity for my career,” Hannes said. “Having graduated from UNI was a big factor in my decision. Iowa has definitely been my home away from home. Coming back to be a head coach and being around my friends is very exciting.”

“My expectation is to be on top of the Midwest Conference, qualify for the tournament and make the NCAAs. I believe those are very attainable goals,” Hannes said. “I will put a lot of effort in recruiting as well as developing the players that we already have. I love the game and the competition of college tennis.”

Hannes enjoyed a decorated playing career at UNI, where she ranks second in Panther history with 86 singles wins. An honorable mention all-conference performer, Hannes was named to the 2007 Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete Team and landed on the ITA All-Academic Team three consecutive years (2005-07).

Hannes earned a bachelor’s degree in exercise science with minors in coaching and business from UNI in 2008. She picked up a master’s in interdisciplinary studies with a focus on psychology and business from Western New Mexico in 2011.

Hannes was part of a record-setting 2013 season at San Jose State. The Spartan women, 19-6 in dual meets, jumped into the national rankings for the first time in school history and were crowned champions of the Western Athletic Conference (WAC). SJSU made its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament. During her first season, SJSU finished 13-7 and set a school record with 12 consecutive dual wins.

Prior to SJSU, Hannes had a strong two-year run with Division II Western New Mexico (Silver City). She was named 2011 Central Region Assistant Coach of the Year and helped guide the Mustang men’s team to the NCAA Tournament in 2010 and 2011. The 2011 men’s squad reached the Elite Eight of the national tournament and earned its highest ranking (No. 22) in program history.

Following her graduation from UNI, Hannes coached at Van Der Meer Tennis Academy in Hilton Head Island, S.C., and then moved on to Goldsboro, N.C., as an assistant tennis pro at Walnut Creek Country Club. Hannes was an instructor for ACT Tennis Services in Downers Grove, Ill., and coached one year (2011-12) with Tennis Europe in Stamford, Conn. She was recently involved with academies at Norcal Tennis and Silicon Valley Tennis.
