Dan Schofer
Head Coach - 7th Season
Schofer enters his seventh year as Cornell College head coach of men's and women's cross country and his first year as head coach of men's and women's track and field in 2012-2013.

A native of Wilmette, Ill., Schofer graduated magna cum laude from Carleton College in Northfield, Minn., in 2000 with a major in biology. He earned an MS degree in exercise physiology from the University of Oregon in December 2001. While at Oregon, he taught running and weight training courses in the physical education department, worked as a teaching assistant in the exercise physiology department, and competed for Team Eugene, a running club active in the Pacific Northwest.

In his first six years with the cross country and track programs, Schofer has coached 34 individual all-conference performances, eight all-conference relays, 11 conference champions and 3 NCAA All-Americans. Under his guidance, the distance runners have set 21 new Cornell records.

Highlights from the 2011-12 year include the program's fourth consecutive NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships qualifier in Ben Jacobs. Chase Nowak and Jacobs earned all-conference honors by placing third and sixth, respectively. Allie Jagielo (ninth) and Leslie Smebak (15th) also earned all-conference recognition. The combined total of four all-conference honors set a single-season program record. Jacobs won the conference indoor track title in the 5K and went on to break 15:00 at that distance and 31:00 for 10K during the outdoor season. Laura Ettlin (17:59) and Smebak (18:00) both surpassed the previous Cornell 5K record by more than 20 seconds.

Cornell's distance runners enjoyed an outstanding year in 2010-2011. Andrew Tobben won his second straight IIAC title in cross country, as he led the Rams to a third-place team finish for the second straight year. Chase Nowak and Kirkwood Donavin also earned All-IIAC honors. Tobben qualified for Nationals and led three of his teammates to All-Region honors, as the Rams finished a program-best sixth place at the NCAA Central Regional Championships, barely missing a team bid to the NCAA National Championships. Tobben (7th in the Region), was followed closely by Donavin (12th), Nowak (15th), and Adam Rooyakkers (33rd).

Donavin was named the IIAC's most valuable performer at the indoor track championships, as he won the mile and anchored Cornell to dominating victories in both the distance medley and 4x800 relays. He went on to place third at the NCAA National Championships in the mile, where he set a Cornell record of 4:11.02. Donavin won both the 800 and 1500 meters at the outdoor championships, and the 4x800 relay team, this time anchored by Rooyakkers, won the Rams' third straight title in the event. Tobben and Nowak each earned All-IIAC honors and scored in two events at the meet, and Rooyakkers placed second behind Donavin in the 800, as Cornell scored 63 points in five distance events at the IIAC Championships.

In 2010, Cornell's women set a program record by placing 11th of 27 teams at the NCAA Central Regional Championships. The team had a gap of just 24 seconds between its No. 1-5 runners. On the track, Allie Jagielo set a school record (10:30) in the 3k, good for fifth at the IIAC Indoor Championships and just ahead of teammate Elise Mead (10:32). The Rams' 4x800 meter relay set an indoor school record (9:52) with just one senior in the line-up. Mead and Jagielo both broke the previous school record in the 5k, running 18:20 and 18:24, respectively. Mead also set a new Cornell mark in the 10k (38:15) and placed fourth at the IIAC Championships. Jagielo earned All-IIAC honors by placing second in the 3,000 meter steeplechase.

Schofer came to Cornell from Rhodes College in Memphis, Tenn., where he served for four years as assistant coach of men's and women's cross country and track and field. During his time at Rhodes, he helped coach 40 individual all-conference performances, one team and nine individual conference championships, one team and seven individual NCAA Championships qualifiers, and four NCAA All-American performances.

Schofer also served as assistant coach for the Carleton women's track and field program for the 2002 winter and spring seasons.

During his junior and senior years at Carleton, Schofer captained both the cross country and track and field teams. Additionally, he earned 3 most-improved awards, several all-conference citations, and qualified as an individual for the NCAA Cross Country Championships in the fall of 1999. Coach Schofer has continued to train and compete at a high level since graduating from college.

Schofer has USA Track and Field Level II coaching certification and is a member of the US Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

"I have high expectations for the student-athletes in our program, in terms of discipline, hard work, sportsmanship, and citizenship. Participating in cross country and track at Cornell is one of the most demanding aspects of our students' college experience, but there is no question that it is also one of the most rewarding. From our fastest to our slowest runners, all members of our program enjoy the lifelong bonds of friendships formed and the satisfaction gained from working hard and improving as part of a competitive team."

Schofer and his wife, Marie, a competitive distance runner herself who works in Cornell's office of admission, live in Mount Vernon.
