IOWA CITY – Freshman Shashanna Moll claimed a convincing singles win in Cornell's 8-1 dual loss to three-time defending Midwest Conference champion Grinnell Wednesday night at the University of Iowa Tennis Courts.

The Rams (1-5 overall, 0-1 MWC South) competed tough at the top of the lineup against the perennial power Pioneers (6-2, 3-0) in a makeup meet that was rained out Sunday in Mount Vernon.

Moll impressed at No. 2 singles, taking a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Sadhana Athreya. Cornell No. 1 player Ariana Hudson battled Shirlene Luk in a tight 7-5, 7-5 singles setback.

Cornell's Anne Seng (6-1, 6-1), Dana Dowell (6-0, 6-0), Heather Schrauth (6-0, 6-0) and Veronika Reidel (6-0, 6-3) dropped their singles matches.

Hudson and Moll gave the Rams their best chance in doubles play, falling 8-5 at the No. 1 position. Grinnell won 8-2 at No. 2 and 3 doubles.

Coming up – The Rams head to St. Peter, Minn., this weekend for the USTA/ITA Midwest Regional Championships and Gustie Fall Invite, hosted by Gustavus Adolphus College. Competition begins Friday and runs through Sunday.
