MOUNT VERNON – Cornell College's Abrah Masterson has been named the Midwest Conference Women's Cross Country Performer of the Week for the period ending Sept. 15.
Masterson was the top freshman finisher at the 12-team Les Duke Invitational Saturday at Grinnell's Oakland Acres Golf Course. The Granby, Colo., native finished fourth out of 151 runners, completing her first collegiate 6K race in 23 minutes, 1 second.
Masterson placed behind three runners from No. 2 nationally-ranked Wartburg.
Masterson led the Rams to a strong runner-up team finish with 76 points. Cornell beat the four other MWC teams at the meet, which included a 32-point win over No. 9 regionally-ranked Grinnell, which took third.
The team performance vaulted the Rams to No. 8 in the NCAA Division III Central Region Poll, released Tuesday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). This marks Cornell's highest-ever region ranking in women's cross country. The Cornell women appeared in the 2011 region poll for most of that season at No. 10.
Coach Dan Schofer's young and talented squad featured three freshmen, three sophomores and a senior in its top seven at the Grinnell meet. Senior Laura Ettlin finished ninth, freshman Rachel Moline 16th, and sophomore Sam Martinez 20th.
The Rams return to action Sept. 28 at the Rhodes College Invitational in Memphis, Tenn.
