MOUNT VERNON – Cornell senior outside hitter Kathleen O'Connor and junior middle blocker Taylor Dicus have been named the Midwest Conference Volleyball Offensive and Defensive Performers of the Week, respectively, for the period ending Sept. 15.
O'Connor, of Waukegan, Ill., made school history in becoming the all-time leader for kills with 1,404. She is the ninth MWC player ever to reach the 1,400-kill milestone. O'Connor broke the program's previous kills mark of 1,395, set by Laura Dudgeon from 2006-09.
O'Connor posted a .305 attack percentage with 66 kills (3.88 kps), 84 digs (4.94 dps), 16 blocks (0.94 bps) and five service aces in guiding the Rams to a 4-1 record last week. She recorded three double-doubles (kills-digs) as an all-tournament selection at the ACM Invitational Sept. 13-14 in Decorah, where Cornell swept all four of its opponents.
O'Connor tallied 46 kills, 57 digs and 12 blocks in four tournament matches. She delivered a 20-kill, 27-dig effort Sept. 11 in a five-set loss at Coe.
Dicus was again a force at the net, notching a team-best 18 blocks (five solo) for the week. The Mount Vernon native averaged 1.06 blocks per set. Dicus also led Cornell's front-line players with a .328 attack percentage and totaled 48 kills (2.82 kps).
Dicus moved past Dudgeon for second place on Cornell's career list for total blocks with 327. The all-time record is 330 blocks, held by Kori Sims (2000-04).
The Rams compete at the Illinois Wesleyan Tournament Sept. 20-21 in Bloomington, Ill. Cornell has matches on Friday against Robert Morris-Peoria and Illinois Wesleyan. On Saturday, the Rams play Culver-Stockton and 21th-ranked Carthage.
Cornell received 13 votes in Tuesday's AVCA Division III Coaches Top 25 Poll.
