MOUNT VERNON – It was a successful coaching debut for Carolina Hannes as her Cornell women's tennis team edged Loras, 5-4, in Saturday's season opener.
The Rams (1-0) were tough at the top of the lineup, receiving two wins apiece from junior No. 1 player Ariana Hudson and freshman No. 2 Shashanna Moll. Sophomore Heather Schrauth also collected a pair of victories for Cornell.
"It's always good to start the season with a win," Hannes said. "The girls worked so hard during the preseason and deserved this. It was nice to see them competing on the court."
Hudson and Moll joined forces for an 8-4 victory at No. 1 doubles and both cruised to straight-set singles wins. Hudson captured career win No. 50 with a 6-4, 6-1 triumph in singles. Moll rolled past her No. 2 singles opponent, 6-0, 6-2.
Schrauth and freshman Anne Seng recorded an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles, giving the Rams a 2-1 lead entering singles play. Schrauth capped her perfect day with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles.
Coming up – The Rams are back home Sept. 6 to face Midwest Conference foe Lawrence in a 4 p.m. dual. Cornell then plays host to rival Coe on Sept. 10.
