NAPERVILLE, Ill. – Cornell's Brennan Stine closed a strong sophomore season on the track with a personal-best effort in the 400-meter dash Friday night at the North Central Gregory Last Chance Qualifier.

Stine won his heat and finished eighth overall with a time of 49.45 seconds. The event featured seven heats and 28 total competitors. Nebraska Wesleyan's John Kersenbrock won the race in 48.54.

Stine topped his previous-best 400 mark of 49.5, recorded at the Loras Open April 27. He finished fourth (49.7) at last weekend's Midwest Conference Outdoor Championships in Beloit, Wis.

Senior Leslie Smebak competed Thursday night in the women's 5,000 at North Central. She did not finish the race due to injury. Smebak was coming off a school-record performance in which she won the MWC 10,000.
