MOUNT VERNON – Cornell sophomore first baseman Kari Martin has been named to the 2013 Great Lakes All-Region Team by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA).
Martin was an at-large selection on the 15-player third team. The slugger from Mount Vernon joined second-team pick Shannon Murray (utility) of Lawrence as the lone honorees from the Midwest Conference.
A complete list of all-region performers can be found at NFCA Division III All-Region Teams.
Martin is the sixth Ram softball player to garner all-region accolades, the fourth under head coach Shanda Ness. The list of past recipients includes Carly Goolsby (2011), Nicole Duncan (2008-10), Sara Blaser (2009), Janene McCune (2006) and Alex Myers (2004-05).
Martin was honored last week on the All-MWC First Team as a first baseman. She tied for the conference lead in total bases (78), which ranks third on Cornell's single-season list. Martin finished second in the MWC in doubles (11), third in hits (50), fourth in slugging percentage (.650), fifth in batting average (.417), sixth in on-base percentage (.462) and eighth in home runs (5).
Martin became the fourth Ram in school history to tally 50 hits in a season. She recorded 17 multi-hit games to lead this year's team.
Martin helped guide the 23-16 Rams to an MWC Tournament title and an automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Tournament, both firsts for the program. Cornell went 0-2 in the Pella Regional, although gave eventual champion Central arguably its toughest test of the tournament in a 1-0 eight-inning loss in the first round.
