MOUNT VERNON – Cornell junior pitcher Jackie Sernek was selected to the all-tournament softball team at the NCAA Division III Pella Regional that concluded Sunday in Pella.
Sernek sported a 1.70 earned run average in two pitching appearances, which included a 1-0 opening-round loss in eight innings Thursday to eventual region champion Central. In that game, the Cornell right-hander limited the 16th-ranked Dutch to just two hits and four total base runners. Central racked up 26 hits and 14 runs in its next three tournament games to claim the title.
Sernek gave up two runs in 4.2 innings of relief in Friday's 7-1 loss to 25th-ranked Augustana. For the tournament, the Chicago, Ill., native struck out seven and walked two in 12.1 innings.
A complete list of the all-tournament team can be found at Pella Softball Regional.
Sernek set school records for most shutouts (7) and strikeouts (130), and lowest opponent batting average (.212) in a season. She finished the spring with a 13-4 record and 1.70 ERA. Sernek was the 2013 Midwest Conference South Division Co-Pitcher of the Year.
The Rams, champions of the MWC Tournament, went 0-2 in their NCAA softball debut. Coach Shanda Ness' squad finished the campaign at 23-16, ranking second on the school's single-season wins list. The Rams bring back eight starting position players and both starting pitchers in 2014.
