MOUNT VERNON – Dubuque relied on two big innings to take a tight 3-2, 4-2 nonconference sweep over the host Rams Monday night at Mount Vernon Softball Complex.

Cornell (14-12) outhit the Spartans for the day, 15-8, but squandered several scoring chances with 17 total runners left on base.

In Game 2, Dubuque (13-15) did all its damage in a four-run fourth inning. All four runs were unearned and crossed with two outs.

The Rams came back to plate two in the bottom of the fifth. Kelsey Boss had an RBI single and Britt Schoon made it 4-2 on a sacrifice fly. Cornell had a rally brewing in the seventh, but the Spartans escaped a bases-loaded jam with a game-ending fielder's choice.

Boss and Kari Martin each had a pair of hits in the nightcap. Renata Rankin delivered her sixth double of the season.

Junior Amanda Engel (6-9) gave up just four hits in her 11th complete game of the season. She struck out four and walked seven.

In the opener, Cornell grabbed a 2-0 lead in the fifth inning on an RBI single by Schoon followed by a run-scoring double by Abby Haubold. Dubuque answered in its next at-bat with three runs – one unearned – that decided the game.

Schoon led the Ram lineup with three singles. Yost went 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Jackie Sernek (7-3) scattered four hits over seven innings. She fanned four and walked three.

Coming up – Cornell plays host to 13th-ranked Coe (28-4) in a rescheduled doubleheader at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 24, at Mount Vernon Softball Complex.
