MONMOUTH, Ill. – Cornell's men's tennis team came up short in a battle for the final spot in the Midwest Conference Championships, falling 6-3 to South Division foe Monmouth Sunday afternoon.
The Rams wrapped up a solid dual season at 12-6 overall, 2-2 in the MWC under sixth-year head coach Patrick Cote. With the win, Monmouth (9-8, 3-1 MWC) earned the No. 2 seed in the South Division for next week's four-team tournament.
Ashan DeSilva and Ben Williamson scored an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles, giving the Rams a chance trailing 2-1 entering singles play. But Monmouth claimed singles wins at the top four positions to take the dual.
Williamson capped a perfect day with a 6-4, 7-6 victory at No. 6 singles. Orion Wilkinson rolled 6-3, 6-0 at No. 5 singles. The Fighting Scots won the four other singles matches in straight sets.
Coming up – The Rams compete in the MWC Individual Tournament April 27-28 in Madison, Wis.
