MOUNT VERNON – Cornell's Kari Martin and Jackie Sernek swept this week's Midwest Conference softball awards for the period ending March 31.
Martin, a sophomore first baseman, has been named the MWC Softball Performer of the Week. Sernek, a junior right-hander, got the nod as Pitcher of the Week.
The duo led the Rams (7-4) to a pair of convincing wins – 9-1 in six innings, 9-0 in five – over Beloit Saturday in Beloit, Wis. It was the team's first action on the diamond since March 14.
The long layoff showed no ill-effects for Martin, who enjoyed a perfect 5-for-5 day at the plate while posting a 2.000 slugging percentage. The Mount Vernon native had two hits in the opener, including a solo home run in her first at-bat. Martin went 3-for-3 in the second game with two doubles, an RBI and a run scored.
Martin is batting .429 on the season and ranks fourth in the MWC in slugging percentage (.714).
Sernek, of Chicago, Ill., fired a two-hit shutout in the five-inning nightcap. She struck out 10 batters and walked two in recording her third complete game of the season.
Sernek improved her season record to 3-1. She owns a 2.07 earned run average with 26 strikeouts in 23.2 innings pitched.
The Rams play host to Monmouth (7-6) in a rescheduled MWC South Division doubleheader at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 3, at Mount Vernon Softball Complex.
