MOUNT VERNON – Patrick Cote's men's tennis team made quick work of two nonconference foes Saturday with 9-0 shutouts of Wisconsin Lutheran and Dubuque in the Small Multi-Sport Center Arena.
The Rams boosted their perfect dual record to 7-0, reeling off five home wins the past two weekends.
Junior Joseph Gelfand and freshman Thomas Weiss both remained unbeaten in singles competition. Gelfand, at the No. 5 spot in the lineup Saturday, improved to 7-0 on the season with straight-set victories over Wisconsin Lutheran (6-1, 6-2) and Dubuque (6-1, 7-5).
Weiss surrendered just one game at No. 6 singles, blanking Wisconsin Lutheran (6-0, 6-0) and beating Dubuque (6-0, 6-1). He is 6-0 this spring.
Weiss partnered with senior Justin Bradfield in an 8-0 rout of Wisconsin Lutheran. They posted an 8-3 win over Dubuque.
The Rams also picked up two singles wins apiece from Ashan DeSilva at No. 1, Garrett Russikoff at No. 2, Bradfield at No. 3 and Orion Wilkinson at No. 4. Russikoff moved to 8-1 in singles play, while Bradfield raised his record to 7-1.
Cornell's top doubles team of Russikoff and Shonkwiler tallied wins of 8-5 (Wisconsin Lutheran) and 8-3 (Dubuque). DeSilva and Wilkinson, the No. 2 tandem, posted identical 8-1 victories.
Coming up – The Rams travel to Hilton Head, S.C., for three scheduled duals over Spring Break later this week. Cornell opens play Friday, March 8 against Malone (Ohio) University (2-4), followed by a match Saturday, March 9 with Northwestern (Minn.) College (1-3). The Rams conclude the trip March 11 against Alfred (N.Y.) University (2-2).
