MOUNT VERNON – Cornell's record-setting women's basketball team carries a new No. 11 national ranking into the postseason.
The Rams (22-1) jumped three spots to No. 11 in the USA Today Sports Division III Top 25 Coaches' Poll, which marks the highest ranking in program history. Cornell tallied 111 points, closely behind No. 10 Tufts with 123. The Rams are among nine one-loss or undefeated teams in the Top 25.
Cornell, a winner of seven straight games, climbed one place to No. 14 in the D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll with 288 points. The Rams gained 49 points from the previous week.
The Rams remained No. 1 in Wednesday's NCAA Division III Central Region rankings, sporting a 22-1 in-region record. UW-Whitewater moved to No. 2 in the region, followed by No. 3 Washington (Mo.), No. 4 Carthage, No. 5 UW-Oshkosh, No. 6 Illinois Wesleyan, No. 7 Monmouth and No. 8 UW-Stevens Point.
Cornell, the 2012-13 Midwest Conference regular-season champions with a 17-1 record, is the No. 1 seed and host for this weekend's MWC Tournament in the Small Multi-Sport Center.
The Rams play No. 4 seed Carroll (13-8) in a semifinal game at 5 p.m. Friday. No. 2 seed Monmouth (19-4) meets No. 3 seed St. Norbert (15-8) at 7 p.m. The championship is 3 p.m. Saturday, with the winner earning an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.
