JACKSONVILLE, Ill. – Cornell's men's tennis team got its 2013 season off to a rolling start with a pair of dual wins Saturday at Illinois College.
The Rams (2-0) blanked Midwest Conference foe Illinois College, 9-0, in the opener. Cornell followed up with a 6-3 nonconference victory over Webster.
Senior Garrett Russikoff notched his 99th career win during a perfect 4-0 day. He passed Kevin Wagner (95 wins, 1998-01) for second place on the program's all-time wins list. Austin Reed (1999-02) is Cornell's career leader with 109 victories.
Russikoff partnered with Tyler Shonkwiler for two wins at No. 1 doubles, both by 8-2 scores. Russikoff wonat No. 2 singles against Webster, 6-3, 7-6 (7-2), and beat Illinois College 6-0, 6-1.
In singles play, No. 1 Ashan DeSilva, No. 3 Justin Bradfield and No. 4 Joseph Gelfand joined Russikoff with 2-0 records. Orion Wilkinson and Shonkwiler were both 6-0, 6-0 winners against Illinois College. Cornell's No. 2 (DeSilva/Wilkinson) and No. 3 (Bradfield/Thomas Weiss) doubles teams both swept Illinois College, 8-0.
The Rams took five of the six singles matches from Webster, including a 6-3, 6-1 triumph from DeSilva at the top spot. Bradfield and Weiss won in straight sets, while Gelfand pulled out a 6-4, 4-6, 10-8 victory.
Coming up – The Rams are back in action Saturday, Feb. 23 for a double dual at home. Cornell plays St. Ambrose at 9 a.m., followed by a 3 p.m. match with MWC foe Ripon.
