JACKSONVILLE, Ill. – Cornell's inside game delivered clutch points and Peter Catchings flirted with a triple-double as Cornell pulled out a 74-69 road win over Midwest Conference foe Illinois College Thursday night.
Cornell (8-12 overall, 7-8 MWC) earned a season sweep over the Blueboys (8-12, 5-10 MWC) in a game that witnessed 10 lead changes over the final 11 minutes. Trailing 62-61 with 3:23 to go, the Rams used a 10-3 run to take the lead for good.
Post players Nick Bobb and Alec Winzenried accounted for all 10 points during Cornell's decisive run. Bobb scored six unanswered points on two free throws and a pair of inside baskets that put the Rams ahead, 67-62. Winzenried added a layup and two foul shots to push the margin to 71-65 with 22 seconds remaining.
Illinois College trimmed the deficit to 71-69 with 10 seconds left. Cornell's Tabari Carter hit one free throw to make it a three-point game. The Blueboys turned the ball over on the next possession, and then Joey Guth nailed two free throws to seal the victory.
Bobb paced a balanced scoring attack with 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the field. Winzenried came up big off the bench, finishing with 10 points, nine rebounds and two blocked shots in 21 minutes.
Catchings had an impressive performance with 10 rebounds, eight points and eight assists. The freshman guard committed just one turnover in 35 minutes.
Guth and Reggie Greenwood pitched in 13 and 12 points, respectively. Guth also had five rebounds.
The Rams led by as many as 11 points in the first half and held a 33-27 advantage at the break. Cornell made 15-of-27 field goals in the second half and shot 49.1 percent for the game.
Cornell won the battle on the boards, 40-34.
Coming up – The Rams play host to Lawrence (10-10, 8-7 MWC) in a 3 p.m. tipoff Saturday in the Small Multi-Sport Center. Cornell looks to avenge an early-season 79-70 loss to the Vikings.
