MOUNT VERNON – The season's first NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Region Rankings have been released, and the Cornell Rams are No. 1 in the Central Region.
The Rams head the Central Region with an 18-1 record against in-region foes. The regional rankings include eight teams in each of the nation's eight regions. A complete list can be found at NCAA Division III Regional Rankings.
Cornell stands 18-1 overall, 13-1 in the Midwest Conference under eighth-year head coach Brent Brase. The Rams are ranked No. 14 in the USA Today Sports Top 25 Coaches' Poll, and No. 17 in the D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll for the second consecutive week.
The Rams got the nod over perennial power Washington University (Mo.) as the top team in the Central Region. The Bears are ranked 11th and 12th in the national polls.
Carthage comes in at No. 3 in the Central Region, followed by UW-Superior, Monmouth, UW-Whitewater, UW-Stevens Point and Wisconsin Lutheran. Cornell owns two wins (64-60 on Dec. 22, 71-53 on Jan. 15) over MWC foe Monmouth, the only regionally-ranked team the Rams have faced.
Cornell goes after a school-record 19th win Wednesday against Illinois College (6-13, 4-10 MWC) in Jacksonville, Ill. Tipoff is 5 p.m.
The Rams have posted an average scoring margin of +19.0 points, which ranks 14th in Division III. Cornell is fourth nationally in field goal percentage (46.1) and rebound margin (+13.1 rpg).
Cornell needs just two wins in its remaining four regular-season games to clinch the conference title and No. 1 seed in the MWC Tournament.
