MOUNT VERNON – Cornell took down Monmouth 2-0 in a pivotal Midwest Conference contest Tuesday afternoon in a cold and rainy Mount Vernon.

The Rams (5-6-1, 3-2 MWC) took advantage of two penalty kicks to blow past the Fighting Scots (2-10-1, 1-3-1 MWC). Both penalty makers came from the foot of Pietro Amado (JR/Sao Paulo, Brazil), at the 43rd and 54th minute mark.

Monmouth failed to get on the board as goalkeeper Jerome Richards (JR/Urbandale, Iowa) was once again solid in net for the Rams. Richards faced eight attempts on net from the Scots and saved each to uphold the shutout victory, his third of the season.

Cornell was efficient on their offensive attack, scoring the two markers on nine shots. Amado fired four total attempts with Logan Wright (JR/Davenport, Iowa) chipping in two as well.

The Rams move into a tie for the fourth place in the Midwest Conference standings with four MWC matches remaining. The top four teams qualify for the Midwest Conference Tournament.

Richards worked the complete 90 minutes in goal for Cornell.

Coming up – Cornell faces off against Lawrence University (1-10, 0-4 MWC) Saturday at 3:30 p.m. in Appleton, Wis.
