MOUNT VERNON – Women's tennis clinched a berth in the Midwest Conference tournament Sunday with a 9-0 sweep over Lawrence.

This is the third time in the last four years that Cornell has earned a berth in the MWC tournament. With their win today, the Rams locked down the No. 3 seed and will play No. 2 seed Lake Forest on April 26th. The Foresters narrowly edged the Rams during the regular season, 5-4.

Cornell (8-5, 7-2 MWC) came out hot in doubles and went up double breaks on all three courts against Lawrence (6-11, 4-5 MWC). The No. 2 pairing of Abbey Nelson (SO/Glen Ellyn, Ill.)/Gabriella Ferro (SR/Kansas City, Mo.) led the charge with an 8-1 victory.

The Rams did not let up and took all six singles matches in dominating fashion. The closest match was at No. 1 as Julia Thome (SR/Crystal Lake, Ill.) cruised to a 6-3, 6-3 triumph. No. 4 Ferro and No. 5 Katie Mintle (SR/Broomfield, Colo.) both rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 sweep. The match was finished off at No. 3 with a 6-1, 6-0 win from Raquel Ruiz (SO/Round Lake, Ill.).
