MOUNT VERNON – The Rams moved one step closer to a Midwest Conference tournament berth with a 9-0 triumph over Ripon and a 6-3 victory over St. Norbert on Saturday.

In Cornell's first win over St. Norbert (10-5, 6-3) since 2012, it was St. Norbert that got off to a hot start by taking two out of three doubles matches. The No. 1 pairing of Julia Thome (SR/Crystal Lake, Ill.)/Raquel Ruiz (SO/Round Lake, Ill.) got the lone doubles point, coming out on top 8-3.

The Rams turned it on when singles play rolled around and took five out of six singles matches in dominating fashion. Thome won her match at No. 1 with a 6-1, 6-2 score line. With her victory, Thome is now 2nd on Cornell's all-time singles wins list, just five behind current teammate Gabriella Ferro (SR/Kansas City, Mo.).

Other Ram's dominated on the court with No. 3 Ruiz and No. 4 Ferro cruising to 6-1, 6-1, and 6-0, 6-1 wins, respectively. The match was rounded out with No. 5 Katie Mintle (SR/Broomfield, Colo.) and No. 6 Janice Elkerton (JR/North Branch, Minn.) putting away the Green Knights with 6-1, 6-4, and 6-1, 6-0 wins, respectively.

Cornell (7-5, 6-2 MWC) also scored a sweep over Ripon (3-15, 1-7 MWC) on Saturday.

Momentum was heavy in Cornell's corner since the beginning of the match, and the Rams rode that to drop only three games total in doubles.

Singles was more of the same as Cornell dominated play, highlighted by shutouts at No. 2 from Abbey Nelson (SO/Glen Ellyn, Ill.) and No. 4 from Ferro. The dual ended with a three-set victory for Cornell at No. 6 from Megan Pope (SO/Chowchilla, Calif.), coming out on top 5-7. 6-0, 10-3.

Coming up – The Rams finish off their regular season tomorrow with a conference showdown against Lawrence. First ball will be at 1:30 PM in Mount Vernon. With a win, Cornell would clinch the number 3 seed and a date with Lake Forest in the semifinals of the Midwest Conference team tournament.
