Cornell blasts Buccaneers in three sets

MOUNT VERNON – Cornell's volleyball team is more than halfway home to a sixth consecutive Midwest Conference regular-season championship after a quick 25-13, 25-19, 25-16 sweep of Beloit inside the Small Multi-Sport Center.

The Rams (17-5 overall) needed only 58 minutes Saturday afternoon to climb to 5-0 atop the MWC standings. Cornell cruised to its fifth straight victory and has now won 12 sets in a row.

Cornell trailed for only two total points in this match, which saw the Rams record a season-best .372 attack percentage. The Buccaneers (6-12 overall, 1-2 MWC) entered as the league leader in blocks and digs, but couldn't slow down Cornell's offense.

Diamond Boyd (SR/Elk Grove Village, Ill.) paced the Rams with 12 kills on 16 errorless swings for an impressive .750 hitting percentage. Nicole Ciari (JR/San Jose, Calif.) had an efficient 11-kill match on 17 attempts, followed by Libby Schnoor (SR/Camanche, Iowa) with eight kills.

Amanda Leimbach (SR/Olathe, Kan.) sparked a strong service game with five aces to go with seven digs. She served the final six points of the opening set and the rout was on.  

Jillian Schulte (JR/Naperville, Ill.) fired three aces and dished 30 assists. The Rams netted 11 aces with only three service errors for the afternoon.

The Rams received a match-best 11 digs from Sydney Meeker (FR/Mount Vernon, Iowa), who also converted two aces.   

Coming up – Cornell concludes a four-match homestretch Wednesday against Knox (9-13 overall, 0-5 MWC). First serve is 7 p.m.
