Cornell men fall short at Iowa Wesleyan

MOUNT PLEASANT – Cornell surrendered two goals early in the second half, proving to be the difference in Wednesday's 3-1 men's soccer loss to Iowa Wesleyan at East Lake Park.

The Rams (2-2) and host Tigers (2-2-1) battled for 45 scoreless minutes before action picked up offensively in the second half. Iowa Wesleyan put the first point on the board in the 54th minute, and added a second in the 56th.

Pietro Amado (JR/Sao Paulo, Brazil) pulled Cornell back in it with a penalty kick at the 69-minute mark, cut the gap to 2-1. It was the third goal of the season for the Rams' leading scorer.

Iowa Wesleyan converted an insurance goal in the 77th minute to complete the scoring.

The Rams fired 11 total shots, four from Amado. David Berger (JR/Tualatin, Ore.) finished with three attempts, Sam Duff (FR/Fort Collins, Colo.) two.

Cornell starting goalkeeper Tom Gallagher (FR/Cincinnati, Ohio) had three saves and allowed two goals over 63 minutes. Jerome Richards (JR/Urbandale, Iowa) came on to finish the match.

Coming up – The Rams head to Lincoln, Neb., Sunday for a 3:30 p.m. nonconference match with Nebraska Wesleyan (2-3).
