Murphy finishes runner-up at Les Duke

GRINNELL – Cornell's MariKate Murphy (SR/Kirklin, Ind.) continued a strong start to her senior season with a runner-up showing at Saturday's Les Duke Invitational, hosted by Grinnell College.

Coming off an individual title in the Sept. 1 opener, Murphy placed second out of 123 finishers in this 14-team field. She crossed the line in 22:23 for the six-kilometer distance and beat Grinnell's Emma Zimmerman by four seconds as the top Midwest Conference finisher. 

Murphy trailed only Wartburg's Ashlyn Bagge, who was crowned champion in 21:29.

The Rams recorded a solid third in the team race with 97 points, behind a pair of regionally-ranked squads in No. 4 Wartburg (33) and No. 6 Grinnell (57). Cornell outdistanced MWC foe Monmouth by nine points.

Lily Niswonger (SR/St. Louis, Mo.) ran well for the Rams, taking 13th overall in 23:18. Cornell put two more runners in the top 30 with Dominique Fleming (JR/Winterset, Iowa) (29th, 24:24) and newcomer Erin Hosto (FR/La Moille, Ill.) (30th, 24:25).

Zoe Kane-Preissing (SO/Chicago, Ill.) brought in Cornell's fifth score in 45th place (25:12). Sophomores Lexi Ferenzi (SO/Chicago, Ill.) and Marissa Czapla (SO/Lincoln, Neb.) finished 54th (25:45) and 56th (25:46), respectively.  

Coming up – Cornell competes at the Brissman-Lundeen Invitational Sept. 22 in Rock Island, Ill. First race is 5 p.m.
