Rams place three in top 15 at Grinnell

GRINNELL – Cornell's men squared off with two other regionally-ranked teams and fielded three top-15 individuals at Saturday's 56th Annual Les Duke Cross Country Invitational, hosted by Grinnell College.

For the second straight meet, first-year runner Mason Wicker (JR/Baldwin, Wis.) paced Cornell's pack. The junior placed seventh out of 164 finishers, covering the eight-kilometer course in 25:50.

Austin Bach (JR/Larkspur, Colo.) was clocked in 25:57 for ninth overall, followed by junior teammate Cuyler Gabriel (JR/Santa Barbara, Calif.) in 16th (26:08). Caleb Wilson (JR/Madison, Wis.), also one of the team's front-runners, was on pace for a high finish but had to withdraw near the end of the race due to heat exhaustion.   

The Rams, No. 6 in the Central Region, finished third out of 12 teams with 112 points. Wartburg (40 points) and Grinnell (101), rated No. 7 and No. 8 in the region respectively, claimed the top two spots in the team standings.

Cornell's final two scores came from Gabe Esser (JR/Winterset, Iowa) in 42nd (27:33) and Paul Zemba (SO/Leavenworth, Ind.) in 73rd (28:51). Also finishing in the top 100 were Brady Tobin (JR/Erie, Colo.) in 94th (29:23) and Henry Hallgren (JR/Omaha, Neb.) in 99th (29:33).

Alec Bass of the University of Dubuque won the men's race in 24:55.

Coming up – Cornell competes at the Brissman-Lundeen Invitational Sept. 22 in Rock Island, Ill. First race is 5 p.m.
