MOUNT VERNON – A pair of 4-0 volleyball teams battled for five sets and more than two hours Wednesday night, with Dubuque prevailing in the end over the No. 19 nationally-ranked Rams before a big crowd inside the Small Multi-Sport Center.

Cornell (4-1) took the initial two sets before the Spartans came charging back for a 19-25, 24-26, 25-16, 25-20, 15-12 victory to remain unbeaten.

The decisive fifth set was tied 4-4 when Dubuque (5-0) pulled ahead with a mini three-point run that proved to be the difference. Cornell got within 13-12 on a double block by Libby Schnoor (SR/Camanche, Iowa) and Nicole Ciari (JR/San Jose, Calif.). A Ram service error set up match point and then Dubuque finished it on a tip from Karrah Davis that was her 25th kill of the night.

Cornell's balanced offensive attack had four players record double-digit kills, led by 14 apiece from Schnoor and impressive newcomer Allison Eikenberry (FR/Neola, Iowa), who posted a .387 hitting percentage. Diamond Boyd (SR/Elk Grove Village, Ill.) provided 13 kills, Ciari 10.

Setter Jillian Schulte (JR/Naperville, Ill.) dished 45 assists and also led the Rams with 15 digs. Ellie Davidson (JR/Greeley, Colo.) (13), Taylor Axelson (JR/Loveland, Colo.) (11) and Sydney Meeker (FR/Mount Vernon, Iowa) (10) tallied double-figure dig totals as well.

Eikenberry served a pair of aces and Ciari finished with four blocks. The Spartans notched 15 total blocks and limited the Rams to .146 hitting.

Coming up – The Rams travel to Dubuque this weekend for the Loras Invitational. Cornell opens play Friday against Carroll at 3 p.m. and St. Olaf at 7 p.m., followed by Saturday matches against Hamline at 11 a.m. and Loras at 1 p.m.
