Douglas gains MWC offensive accolade

MOUNT VERNON – Cornell sophomore James Douglas III (SO/Deltona, Fla.) has been named Midwest Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the period ending Sept. 2.

Making his first collegiate start at quarterback, Douglas sparked a Ram offense that compiled 618 total yards in Saturday's season-opening 62-25 home victory over Iowa Wesleyan.

Douglas accounted for six touchdowns, three through the air on 17-of-29 passing for 309 yards. He connected on scoring strikes of 30, 38 and 26 yards in the third quarter alone.

Douglas rushed 16 times for a game-high 72 yards. He had TD runs covering 6, 13 and 7 yards, all in the first half. Douglas finished with 381 yards of total offense.

Douglas led the Rams to their highest point total in a season opener since 2003. The team scored on five consecutive possessions in the second half.

Cornell (1-0) takes on rival Coe (1-0) at 1 p.m. Saturday at Clark Field in Cedar Rapids.
