MOUNT VERNON Coach Nate Grosse's Rams kicked off their 2017 campaign in exciting fashion as they defeated Blackburn in double overtime by a final score of 3-2.

Cornell (1-0) took an early lead, scoring its first goal in only the tenth minute of play. The first goal of the season came when David Berger (JR/Tualatin, Ore.) passed the ball to the team's leading scorer from the previous season, Facundo Benavidez (SO/Buenos Aires, Argentina), who then picked up right where he left off, as he turned and blasted a low line-drive to the back of the net.

The Beavers (0-1-1) were undeterred by the early deficit, as they were able to tie the game up with a goal of their own less than ten minutes later.

Cornell came back with a quick answer as Collin Parker (FR/Tucson, Ariz.) dribbled through a group of defenders and then snuck the ball past the Beaver keeper.  The freshman's first goal in his first game as a Ram put his team up 2-1 going into the half.

Blackburn came out of the break ready, battling back yet again to knot things up at 2-2.   This would be the only goal of the second period as the score would remain tied at the end of regulation.

The Rams almost put the Beavers away in the first overtime period when a shot by Luke Connelly ricocheted off the crossbar to an awaiting Benavidez who was uncharacteristically unable to capitalize on the open net opportunity.

Just inside the seventh minute of the second overtime period, Pietro Amado (JR/Sao Paulo, Brazil) was awarded the opportunity to take a penalty-kick.  The junior took full advantage of his opportunity, and was able to burn the ball past the Beaver keeper for a game ending golden goal, thus clenching the victory for Cornell.

Coming up – Cornell heads to Pella Wednesday to play Central College. Kickoff is 5 p.m.
