Women's tennis suffers setback in Indiana

FRANKLIN, Ind. – Cornell's opening weekend of the season ended in a heartbreaking 5-4 loss to Franklin College on Sunday morning.

The Rams (1-2) got off to a strong start at doubles taking two out of the three matches. The No. 2 pairing of Abbey Nelson (SO/Glen Ellyn, Ill.)/Raquel Ruiz (SO/Round Lake, Ill.) led the charge with a dominating 8-3 victory. Katie Mintle (SR/Broomfield, Colo.)/Janice Elkerton (JR/North Branch, Minn.) followed it up with an 8-6 triumph in the No. 3 slot.

Franklin (1-0) rallied when singles rolled around and took four out of six singles matches. Seniors Julia Thome (SR/Crystal Lake, Ill.) (No. 1) and Gabriella Ferro (SR/Kansas City, Mo.) (No. 4) earned the two Cornell singles victories 6-3, 6-3, and 6-4, 6-1, respectively.

Cornell rallied to even up the dual score after being down 4-3, but eventually ended up dropping the last match on court to end the match.


Coming up – Cornell opens up their conference schedule with two home matches against Beloit and Lake Forest on Saturday, September 9th at 9 AM and 3 PM.
