MOUNT VERNON – James Douglas had a dazzling debut at quarterback and defensive end Andrew Joseph (SR/New Orleans, La.) broke an all-time Cornell record as the Rams ran roughshod over Iowa Wesleyan, 62-25, Saturday night at Ash Park Stadium.

Coach Vince Brautigam's Rams put up the most points in a season opener since 2003 and will start a new campaign 1-0 for the 15th time in the last 18 years.

Cornell accumulated 618 yards of total offense, and first-year starter Douglas was a main reason. The sophomore accounted for six touchdowns, highlighted by a 309-yard, 3-TD passing effort. Douglas rushed for three more scores and netted a game-high 72 yards on the ground.

The Tigers (0-1) stayed with the Rams for a while, taking a 19-17 lead early in the second quarter. But Douglas answered with TD runs of 13 and 7 yards before the half and Cornell poured it on from there. The Rams scored on five consecutive possessions after intermission, while holding the guests to just six points.

Douglas connected on big scoring plays of 30 yards to Patrick Brown (JR/Vicksburg, Miss.), 38 yards to Blake MacDowall (SR/Phoenix, Ariz.) and 26 yards to Mickey Hines (SO/Mount Vernon, Iowa), all in the third quarter. He finished 17-of-29 passing for a Ram offense that ran 88 plays in the three-plus hour game.

Joseph, starting his fifth season opener for Cornell, tallied a game-high 12 tackles with 2.5 for losses, including a sack. He became the program's career-record holder with 44.0 tackles for loss.

The Cornell defense came away with five turnovers, including a pair of interceptions by Trever Greene (JR/Stanwood, Iowa) and one pick by Milton Spradley (JR/Sorrento, Fla.). The Tigers managed only 130 rushing yards for the game.

The Rams also made plays on special teams, sparked by an 89-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Malek Folston (SO/Melbourne, Fla.) in the first quarter. Kicker Aaron Nicoll (SO/Longmont, Colo.) had a busy yet perfect night, going 8-for-8 on PATs and booting long field goals of 42 and 46 yards. Nicoll averaged 40.0 yards per punt and also had a 29-yard rush for a fourth-down conversion.

MacDowall led the receiving corps with 100 yards on three catches. Brown caught four balls for 84 yards. Cornell's balanced rushing attack averaged 5.2 yards on 59 carries.

Safety Colter McMenimen (JR/Bayfield, Colo.) posted nine tackles. Zachary Yankovich (JR/Cape Coral, Fla.), Jordan Hardman (JR/Chicago, Ill.) and Alex Rupe (FR/Evergreen, Colo.) each recorded a sack.

Coming up – The Rams travel to play rival Coe Sept. 9 for a 1 p.m. kickoff at Clark Field in Cedar Rapids.
