CEDAR RAPIDS The Cornell women took to the road in their soccer opener, coming up short against a tough Mount Mercy team Friday night by the final score of 7-0.

Cornell (0-1) gave a great effort in trying to cool down the red-hot Mustangs offense, which came into the match after scoring a combined 29 goals in their previous two contests. Rams goalkeeper Nell Rosenthal (SO/Wheaton, Ill.) collected nine saves, and was kept busy by the home team, who took 26 total shots, 16 of which were on goal.

Mount Mercy (3-0) struck quickly, scoring its first goal within the first four minutes of the match. They were led in scoring by Carly Walker, who earned herself a hat trick by the end of the first period.

The Cornell offense struggled to get to Mercy's net with four shots on the night. They were led in shot attempts by Clara Garcia (JR/McMinnville, Ore.) with two, while Cali Pfleger (SO/Racine, Wis.) and Sofia Schnur (SO/Redwood City, Calif.) added a shot each.

Coming up – Cornell plays its first home match Sunday, taking on Edgewood College at 12 p.m.
