CEDAR RAPIDS – Cornell's front foursome set the pace and gradually pulled away from the field in guiding the No. 6 regionally-ranked Rams to the men's cross country team title at Friday's 24th Annual Mustang Gallop at Seminole Valley Park.

It was a dominant season-opening effort by the Rams, who outdistanced runner-up Mount Mercy by a 23-39 margin. Cornell was crowned meet champion for the third consecutive year.

The victory also gave Cornell its second Bremner Cup point of the night, beating Coe 16-43 in head-to-head dual scoring. The Ram women handled the Kohawks, 17-46.

Mason Wicker (JR/Baldwin, Wis.) led Cornell's charge, claiming the individual crown in his first collegiate cross country race. The junior covered the 5-kilometer course in 15:30 with a strong kick at the end.

Austin Bach (JR/Larkspur, Colo.) was runner-up in 15:41, a shade ahead of junior classmate Caleb Wilson (JR/Madison, Wis.) also in 15:41. Cuyler Gabriel (JR/Santa Barbara, Calif.) secured fourth place with a mark of 15:45.

Newcomer Gabe Esser (JR/Winterset, Iowa) brought in Cornell's fifth score, finishing 15th (16:22).

The Rams placed three others in the top 30 with Matthew McDermott (JR/Menasha, Wis.) (19th, 16:52), Paul Zemba (SO/Leavenworth, Ind.) (26th, 17:19) and Henry Hallgren (JR/Omaha, Neb.) (29th, 17:25). The field included 71 total finishers.

Coming up – The Rams are back in action Sept. 9 at the Les Duke Invitational hosted by Grinnell. First race is 10 a.m.
