Rams earn first victory of season

WHITEWATER, Wis. – Cornell's season started off with a split of two matches Friday morning, defeating Edgewood College, 5-4 and falling to #25 nationally ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater, 8 -1.

The Rams got off to a strong start at doubles against Edgewood (1-3), taking two out of the three matches. The No. 1 doubles pairing of Julia Thome (SR/Crystal Lake, Ill.)/Gabriella Ferro (SR/Kansas City, Mo.) started it off with an 8-2 victory and No. 2 pairing of Raquel Ruiz (SO/Round Lake, Ill.)/Abbey Nelson (SO/Glen Ellyn, Ill.) followed it up with an 8-3 victory.

Thome, Cornell's sixth winningest player of all time, started off her year in dominating fashion at No. 1 singles, taking her match 6-2, 6-0. At No. 4 singles, Ferro won 6-1, 6-2 to propel her into seventh on Cornell's all time win list. Janice Elkerton (JR/North Branch, Minn.) rounded out the wins for the Rams with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph at No. 6.

In the morning match against Whitewater (2-0), Elkerton was the highlight getting Cornell's lone match win at No. 6 singles, winning 6-4, 6-3.

 

Coming up – The Rams continue their season-opening road trip Sunday with a 9 a.m. dual with Franklin (Ind.).
