MOUNT VERNON – Cornell's men's cross country team will open the 2017 season regionally-ranked.

The Rams are listed No. 6 in the NCAA Division III Central Region Poll by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). This marks the first time Coach Dan Schofer's men's squad has been regionally-rated since coming in fifth late during the 2010 season.

Cornell is the top Midwest Conference team in the Central Region, two spots ahead of Grinnell. Loras is first, followed by St. Olaf, Nebraska Wesleyan, Carleton and Luther.

The Rams finished 16th at the 2016 Central Region Championships. They return all-region performer Cuyler Gabriel (JR/Santa Barbara, Calif.), all-MWC runners Caleb Wilson (JR/Madison, Wis.) and Austin Bach (JR/Larkspur, Colo.), and two other starters to this year's lineup.

Cornell, picked second in the MWC Preseason Poll, opens competition Sept. 1 at the Mount Mercy Mustang Gallop in Cedar Rapids.
