MOUNT VERNON – Cornell's women's tennis team is expected to make it back to the Midwest Conference Team Championships, according to a vote by league coaches.

The Rams, led by first-year head coach Peter Dumas, are picked fourth in the 2017 MWC Preseason Coaches' Poll released Tuesday. Cornell garnered 56 total points, just four shy of second place.

Defending MWC regular-season champion Grinnell is favored to repeat with 70 points and six first-place tallies. Lake Forest and St. Norbert tied for second with 60 points. The Foresters received two first-place votes, St. Norbert one.

Lawrence is pegged fifth with 44 points, followed by Ripon (27), Illinois College (25), Knox (24), Monmouth (24) and Beloit (15).

The four-team MWC Championships will be contested April 27, 2018, in Madison, Wis.

Cornell returns four starters from last season's 18-7 dual squad that finished third in the MWC with a 7-2 mark. Julia Thome (SR/Crystal Lake, Ill.) is the defending MWC champion at No. 1 singles. She is joined by fellow senior and three-year starter Gabriella Ferro (SR/Kansas City, Mo.) as veteran leaders.

The Rams open competition Sept. 1 in Whitewater, Wis., with duals against the host Warhawks and Edgewood College.
