Cornell women tabbed third by MWC coaches

MOUNT VERNON – Cornell is projected third in the 2017 Midwest Conference Women's Cross Country Preseason Coaches' Poll, it was announced Thursday by the league office.

The Rams received 66 total points and one first-place nod in a voting of the MWC's 10 coaches. Defending MWC champion St. Norbert is the favorite to repeat with 79 points and seven first-place votes. Grinnell is second with 70 points and two first-place tallies.

Coming in behind Cornell is Lake Forest (56 points), Monmouth (51), Lawrence (38), Beloit (37), Knox (24), Illinois College (18) and Ripon (11).

Coach Dan Schofer's Rams have recorded three top-2 MWC finishes since 2013, including a runner-up showing last fall. They bring back four starters to the 2017 lineup, led by all-conference runners MariKate Murphy (SR/Kirklin, Ind.) (eighth) and Dominique Fleming (JR/Winterset, Iowa) (12th).   

This year's MWC meet is hosted by Illinois College Oct. 28 in Jacksonville, Ill.

The Rams open the season Sept. 1 at the Mustang Gallop in Cedar Rapids.
