Zilaitis takes 16th in NCAA shot put

GENEVA, Ohio – Cornell's Charles Zilaitis (SR/Indian Harbour Beach, Fla.) wound up 16th in Friday's men's shot put at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships at SPIRE Institute.

Seeded 13th out of 20 qualifiers, the Ram senior posted a mark of 51 feet, 9.75 inches in his first NCAA outdoor appearance in the event. The top-9 finals cutoff was 52-11.

Zilaitis stood in ninth place after his first of three attempts.

UW-Whitewater's Theron Baumann blew away the field with a winning toss of 60-2.50. John Lowery of Frostburg State took second (57-7.50).

Zilaitis, a three-time Midwest Conference shot put champion, registered a career-best mark of 54-8.25 earlier this outdoor season.

The 2017 Central Region and MWC Field Athlete of the Year concludes an outstanding collegiate career in Saturday's hammer throw, where he qualified 11th with a school-record mark of 189-2. The competition starts at 12:30 p.m.
