Zilaitis breaks own discus mark at Augustana

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Cornell had eight track & field athletes compete at last-chance qualifying meets Thursday night, highlighted by another record-setting effort by senior men's thrower Charles Zilaitis (SR/Indian Harbour Beach, Fla.).

Zilaitis broke his own program record in the discus with a top-35 NCAA mark of 159 feet, 8 inches at the Augustana Midwest Twilight Final Qualifier. The two-time all-American topped his previous-best throw by more than three feet and finished 11th out of 33 competitors.

Zilaitis placed eighth in the shot put (52-10.75), an event in which he ranks 14th nationally.

Also at Augustana, NCAA heptathlon hopeful Libby Schnoor (JR/Camanche, Iowa) set a personal record in the long jump with a leap of 17-3.50. The junior placed second overall in the event.

Schnoor ran 27.52 in the 200 (12th place) and 17.47 in the 100 hurdles (sixth). Nikki Leach (SR/Landenberg, Pa.) took third in the 100 hurdles with a time of 15.05. The Midwest Conference champion remained on the bubble for an NCAA berth.

Emma Cochrane (SO/Mount Vernon, Iowa) was fifth in the 800 (2:21.69).

Cornell's MariKate Murphy (JR/Kirklin, Ind.) established a personal record in the 3000 steeplechase at Thursday's North Central Gregory Final Qualifier in Naperville, Ill. The junior crossed in 11:38.61, taking 11th overall.

The Rams had three sophomores compete in a large field of 1500 men's runners at North Central. Caleb Wilson (SO/Madison, Wis.) led the way, placing 14th out of 41 collegians with a time of 4:03.18. Austin Bach (SO/Larkspur, Colo.) finished 15th (4:03.28) and Mason Wicker (SO/Baldwin, Wis.) 18th (4:04.45).

Coming up – The Rams are certain to have multiple qualifiers for the NCAA Division III Championships May 25-27 in Geneva, Ohio. The final list of meet participants will be revealed Saturday on NCAA.com.
