MOUNT VERNON – Eric Daubach (SR/Omaha, Neb.)'s two-run double in the bottom of the seventh inning gave Cornell just enough cushion in Thursday's 7-6 marathon baseball victory over defending Iowa Conference Tournament champion Luther at Ash Park Field.
The Rams won for the sixth time in the last seven games, raising their season record to 10-13. Cornell stopped a five-game winning streak by the Norse (17-12).
Daubach's hit gave the Rams a 7-3 lead, but Luther charged back in the eighth to make it a 7-6 game. Cornell prevented further damage with John Tesensky (SR/Watertown, Wis.)'s diving catch in center field that saved a run and got the home team out of the inning.
Cornell right-hander Zachary Greenwald (SO/Dubuque, Iowa) worked a scoreless ninth, ending the 3-hour, 10-minute battle on a groundball putout by third baseman TJ Rausch (SR/Washington, Iowa). It was Greenwald's first save of the season.
The teams combined for 31 hits and left 30 runners on base in a game that saw 11 pitchers take the mound. Lucas Larson (SO/Palo, Iowa) and Josh Dimmitt (SR/Fairfield, Iowa) led Cornell's lineup with three hits apiece.
Daubach finished 2-for-4 with a double, two runs and three RBIs. Rausch, Tesensky and Jacob Kvale (SR/Decorah, Iowa) also recorded multi-hit games. Breard's RBI double in the third extended his hitting streak to 14 games.
Left-hander Caleb Wichman (SO/Crescent, Iowa) (1-0) earned his first victory of the spring, allowing two runs and striking out four over five innings. He left with the Rams ahead 4-2.
Luther's Teddy Klingsporn (5-1) was dealt his first pitching defeat of the year. The Rams got to him with 11 hits and four runs in five innings.
Coming up – The Rams (5-3 Midwest Conference) travel to Mauston, Wis., for four single games against the MWC North Division. The trip starts with a 7 p.m. contest Friday against Lawrence (4-19-1, 1-6-1 MWC).
