MOUNT VERNON – Cornell's softball team entered the day ranked No. 9 nationally with a .366 batting average. But the Rams can pitch a little bit too, as UW-Platteville found out in Tuesday's home doubleheader.

The Rams rode a complete-game three-hitter from Jesse Applehans (SR/Highlands Ranch, Colo.) in a 5-0 opening win. Haley Harmon (SO/Becker, Minn.) took the ball in Game 2 and was just two outs shy of a shutout herself, with the Ram prevailing 3-1.

The nonconference sweep pushed Cornell's winning streak to seven games and hiked the team's overall record to 19-7.

The Ram lineup totaled 21 hits in the doubleheader, five belonging to Melissa Orton (JR/Downers Grove, Ill.) who became the 16th member of Cornell's 100-hit club. The junior first baseman finished 5-for-7 at the plate with a double and two RBIs. Orton, batting .402 for the season, now has 101 hits in 84 career games.

Applehans (6-4) did not need much offensive help in the opener, holding the Pioneers (7-21) to three singles in recording her eighth career shutout. The senior struck out eight and did not yield a walk over seven efficient innings. She faced just three batters over the minimum.

Applehans helped her cause with a two-run single in the third inning that made it 3-0. Stephanie Xavier (JR/Aurora, Colo.) and Orton added RBI hits in the sixth.

Xavier went 3-for-4 with a run. Cornell got two hits apiece from Carley Robison (FR/Brighton, Colo.), Orton and Applehans.

Harmon gave the Rams a sterling outing in Game 2, tossing a two-hitter with a season-high 13 strikeouts. The sophomore did not allow an earned run, stretching that such streak to 23 innings. Harmon improved her glossy season record to 13-2.

Orton put Cornell on the board with an RBI single in the third to score Robison. Jana Froehle (FR/Scottsdale, Ariz.) knocked in two more with a single to left-center in the fifth, putting the Rams ahead 3-0.

Orton provided three of Cornell's 10 hits in the nightcap. Robison, Kendra Christensen (SR/Lakewood, Colo.) and Froehle each had two hits.

Coming up – The Rams (7-3 MWC) play host to three-time defending league champion Lake Forest (14-12 overall, 5-3 MWC) in a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday at Mount Vernon Softball Complex.
