MOUNT VERNON – Cornell has landed three Scholar All-Americans by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA), it was announced at the NCAA Division III Championships.

Junior Leonard Bloom (JR/Deerfield, Ill.) (149 pounds), sophomore Ben Hewson (SO/Loveland, Colo.) (165) and senior Michael Maksimovic (SR/Northbrook, Ill.) (174) were recognized by the NWCA for their performances on the mat and in the classroom.

Cornell raised its recent total to 28 Scholar All-Americans in the past eight years under head coach Mike Duroe. This is the first academic all-America awards for all three Ram wrestlers.

To be eligible, a student-athlete must carry a 3.2 grade point average and meet one of the three criteria: qualify for the NCAA Championships, place in the top six at the NCAA qualifier, or win more than 66 percent of matches and wrestle in 50 percent of the scheduled dates.

The Rams were also recognized as an NWCA All-Academic Team with a 3.14 GPA.

The team GPA is calculated as an average of the top 10 student-athletes on each team. At least six wrestlers chosen must have competed in the NCAA qualifying tournament, and the others must have competed in at least 50 percent of the team's scheduled contests.

Bloom (14-7), an economics & business major, holds a 3.49 GPA. The second-year letterwinner compiled 10 bonus-point wins among his 14 victories.

Hewson (23-11) is pursuing a major in biochemistry & molecular biology and carries a 3.28 GPA. The two-year starter placed fifth at the Central Region Championships. Hewson tied for second on the team in wins, highlighted with six falls and six major decisions.

Maksimovic (26-12), a kinesiology major with a 3.51 GPA, closed a fine career with his first appearance at the NCAA Championships. He finished 2-2 in the 174-pound bracket at nationals, one victory shy of all-America honors.

Maksimovic took second at the Central Region Championships to earn an automatic NCAA berth. A three-time region placewinner, Maksimovic posted an 80-63 record in four seasons on the Hilltop. He led this year's squad in wins and major decisions (8).

The Rams placed 20th in the team race with 18 points at last weekend's Championships. It is the program's eighth top-20 national finish in the past 11 years. Senior Aaron Engle (SR/Kansas City, Mo.) was crowned NCAA runner-up at 149 pounds.
