GREEN BAY, Wis. – A heroic 50-point effort and last-second three by Ripon's Ty Sabin abruptly ended Cornell's first trip to the postseason in seven years Friday night in an 80-79 semifinal thriller at the Midwest Conference Men's Basketball Tournament in UW-Green Bay's Kress Events Center.

Leading 79-75 with less than a minute to go, the third-seeded Rams (12-12) were on the verge of sealing their seventh straight win and earning a trip to Saturday's MWC championship game.

The Red Hawks (19-5) cut the margin to 79-77 on a bucket with 44 seconds remaining. After a pair of timeouts, Ripon got a defensive stop and then put the ball in the hands of the nation's leading scorer on the final possession.

Sabin pulled up for a contested 3-pointer at the top of the key and sank it with one second left, denying Cornell's valiant upset bid in a 40-minute battle that witnessed 13 ties and 10 lead changes. Sabin finished his spectacular night with 50 points, going 19-of-29 from the field and 8-of-12 from long range.

The Rams received stellar individual efforts of their own, led by Jon Anderson (JR/Mexico, Mo.)'s 26 points and seven rebounds. The MWC Newcomer of the Year made 9-of-13 field goals and shot 8-of-11 from the foul line.

Grant Anderson (SR/Homewood, Ill.) buried three 3-pointers and totaled 23 points. The team's lone senior starter, Anderson finished a fine career with 952 points and 121 3-point goals, seventh-most on Cornell's all-time list.

Corey Davis (JR/Glendale Heights, Ill.) turned in another strong all-around game with 15 points, nine assists, eight rebounds and four steals. Craig Engle (SO/Marion, Iowa) pitched in nine points, Keegan Van Kooten (FR/Altoona, Iowa) six off the bench.

The Rams grabbed control early in building a 20-10 lead. The Red Hawks responded with a 13-0 run and took a 40-37 advantage into halftime.

Cornell trailed by as many as seven points in the second half, but never let the Red Hawks out of its sight. A pair of free throws by Jon Anderson gave the Rams their first lead of the second half at 61-59 with 7:34 remaining. Cornell's final field goal, a 3-pointer by Grant Anderson, put the Rams ahead 77-72 with 3:27 to go.

Both teams shot 31-of-55 (56.4 percent) from the field. Cornell turned the ball over 12 times, Ripon 10. The Rams beat the Red Hawks on the boards, 29-20.

Sabin was the lone Ripon player to score in double figures.
