Cornell completes 17-1 title run through MWC

MONMOUTH, Ill. – Cornell's women's basketball team completed a wire-to-wire regular-season championship in the Midwest Conference with an 83-59 mauling of Monmouth Saturday in Glennie Gymnasium.

The Rams (19-4 overall) rolled through league play with a 17-1 mark, matching the 2012-13 NCAA Tournament squad for most conference wins in a season. The 19 total wins ties for the third-most by a Cornell team.

Cornell finished two games ahead of St. Norbert and Ripon – both 15-3 – atop the MWC standings in claiming its third loop crown in five years.

The top-seeded Rams host the MWC Tournament Feb. 24-25 in the Small Multi-Sport Center. Cornell plays Grinnell in Friday's first semifinal at 5 p.m., followed by a 7 p.m. matchup between St. Norbert and Ripon. The championship game is 3 p.m. Saturday.

Sierra Bisso (SR/Wheaton, Ill.) became Cornell's new record-holder for made 3-pointers in a season with 68. The senior sharpshooter passed Rikki Mulloy (67 threes in 2014-15) during a sizzling first-quarter performance in which she accounted for 16 points and three triples.

Bisso capped her hot start with a conventional 3-point play that gave Cornell a 24-2 lead with 2:45 remaining in the opening period. The Rams outscored Monmouth (4-19 overall, 4-14 MWC) by a whopping 21-1 margin in the second quarter and led 47-8 at the break.

Cornell continued to pour it on in the third quarter, building a 54-8 advantage just two minutes into the second half. The score ballooned to 74-29 after three quarters.

Tal Neilly (JR/Windsor Heights, Iowa) came off the Ram bench to net a career-high 16 points, sharing game-high scoring honors with Bisso. Neilly connected on 7-of-9 shots from the field. Anne Visser (FR/Cedar Rapids, Iowa) added eight points for Cornell, which had 14 different players score with none of them logging more than 20 minutes.

Cornell held a 45-24 advantage in bench points.

The Rams collected 17 steals, four by Diamond Boyd (SR/Elk Grove Village, Ill.). Haley Grana (JR/Belvidere, Ill.) distributed five of the team's 16 assists.
