LAKE FOREST, Ill. – Cornell strengthened its postseason chances with a pivotal 66-63 victory over tournament contender Lake Forest in a Midwest Conference men's basketball battle Saturday night.

The Rams (10-11 overall, 9-7 MWC), winners of four straight, moved within one game of third-place teams Lake Forest and Lawrence – both at 10-6 – with two games left in the regular season.

Cornell is in a three-team race with Lake Forest and Lawrence for the final two berths into the MWC Tournament. The Rams completed a season sweep of Lake Forest, and split with Lawrence.

Point guard Corey Davis (JR/Glendale Heights, Ill.) had another outstanding game for the Rams, nearly recording his second triple-double of the season. The junior tossed in 17 points – including a key bucket in the final seconds – to go with 10 assists, nine rebounds and five steals.

The Rams led the entire second half, but the narrow margin was never safe until the final horn sounded. Craig Engle (SO/Marion, Iowa), who netted a season-high 16 points, knocked down a critical 3-pointer that put Cornell ahead 64-60 with 1:49 remaining.

The Foresters (12-9 overall) answered with a three on the ensuing possession and Cornell clung to a 64-63 advantage. After a Ram turnover, Lake Forest misfired twice in the final minute with a chance to take the lead.

Davis came through in the clutch with a jumper that made the score 66-63 with 13 seconds to go. The Foresters had a tying 3-point attempt fall off the mark at the end and Cornell held on for arguably its best win of the season.

Engle provided an offensive boost with four 3-pointers in the game. Jon Anderson (JR/Mexico, Mo.) posted 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Grant Anderson (SR/Homewood, Ill.) added seven points and eight boards. Brad Hund (JR/Joliet, Ill.) pitched in nine points.

The game was virtually a statistical stalemate. Cornell accounted for one more made field goal and one more free throw. The Rams edged the Foresters earlier in the season in similar fashion, 65-63.

Coming up – Cornell finishes the regular season with road games against Beloit (6-15 overall, 4-12 MWC) Tuesday and Monmouth (6-15 overall, 6-10 MWC) Saturday, Feb. 18. Tuesday's tipoff is 7:30 p.m. in Beloit, Wis.
