MOUNT VERNON – A 24-11 third-quarter surge propelled Cornell's women's basketball team to an impressive 67-51 victory over Illinois College in a battle between the lone remaining Midwest Conference unbeatens Wednesday night in the Small Multi-Sport Center.

The Rams (7-3 overall), who led for all but 31 seconds, climbed into sole possession of first place in the league at 5-0. Illinois College (7-3 overall), which entered the night on a five-game winning streak, slipped into a second-place tie with Ripon at 4-1.

Cornell dominated on the defensive end, forcing the Lady Blues into a season-high 29 turnovers. Illinois College was held to 32.1-percent shooting and managed to hit just 2-of-19 attempts from 3-point range. The Lady Blues came in averaging 70.8 points per game.

Diamond Boyd (SR/Elk Grove Village, Ill.) turned in her fifth double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds, both game-highs. The senior forward also recorded four steals and three assists.

Anne Visser (FR/Cedar Rapids, Iowa) came off the bench to score 11 points while Sierra Bisso (SR/Wheaton, Ill.) netted 10 for a balanced Ram attack that saw 10 players etch the scoring column.  

Madie Rinehart (SR/Scottsdale, Ariz.) was a presence in the paint with seven points, nine rebounds and four blocked shots. Bisso provided six assists and four steals. Haley Grana (JR/Belvidere, Ill.) pitched in eight points, five assists (with no turnovers) and three steals. Kandis O'Donnell (SO/Cedar Rapids, Iowa) pulled down six rebounds in only 12 minutes of action.

The Rams took a 31-27 lead into halftime before busting it open in the third quarter. Cornell finished the period on a 9-1 run, which included a 3-pointer by Visser and two triples by Bisso that stretched the margin to 55-38.   

Cornell held the MWC's leading scorer Brielle Greenleaf to a season-low nine points, 10 below her average.

Coming up – The Rams hit the road Saturday for a 1 p.m. league contest against Knox (6-4 overall, 3-2 MWC) in Galesburg, Ill. Cornell has won all eight meetings with the Prairie Fire since rejoining the MWC.
