MOUNT VERNON – Cornell's dynamic guard-post tandem of Corey Davis (JR/Glendale Heights, Ill.) and Jon Anderson (JR/Mexico, Mo.) combined for 36 points and 15 rebounds Wednesday night to lead the Rams to a 71-63 Midwest Conference men's basketball win over Illinois College in the Small Multi-Sport Center.

The Rams (4-6 overall, 2-3 MWC) cashed in 25-of-35 free throws and limited the Blueboys (3-7, 0-5 MWC) to just four made field goals over the final 12 minutes to end a five-game slide.

Davis collected 16 points, nine rebounds and eight assists in 39 minutes of action. The junior guard added one steal, which moved him into fourth place on Cornell's all-time list with 140. Davis also topped the 900-point mark for his career (907).

Anderson shot 7-of-11 from the floor and led all scorers with 20 points, the ninth straight game he's reached double figures. He grabbed six rebounds for the Rams, who held a 38-30 advantage on the boards.

Cornell got 11 points each from Grant Anderson (SR/Homewood, Ill.) and Brad Hund (JR/Joliet, Ill.), who both went 5-of-6 from the foul line. Hund had seven rebounds, Anderson six.

Illinois College hung with the Rams most of the game and went ahead 50-49 with 11:31 left to play. But the lead was short-lived as Keegan Van Kooten (FR/Altoona, Iowa) gave Cornell an instant spark off the bench by sinking 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions to put the home team back on top, 55-50.

The Rams protected their lead the rest of the way, hitting just enough free throws down the stretch.

Cornell overcame an early 13-6 deficit and built a 39-33 lead by halftime. The Blueboys stayed in the game with 12 3-point goals on the night. The Rams had a 16-point advantage from the foul line, which included 15-of-17 free-throw shooting in the opening 20 minutes.

Coming up – The Rams travel to Galesburg, Ill., Saturday to face Knox (1-9 overall, 1-4 MWC) for a 3 p.m. conference matchup. Cornell has won six of the last seven meetings in the series.
