MOUNT VERNON – Cornell senior right-hander Jackie Sernek has been named Midwest Conference Softball Pitcher of the Week for the period ending April 20.
Sernek became the third Ram pitcher in school history to record 300 career strikeouts while notching two wins and a save during the team's perfect 4-0 week.
The Chicago, Ill., native went 2-0 in the circle with 18 strikeouts in 13.2 innings. She walked two and did not allow an earned run in three appearances.
Sernek (12-3) tossed four hitless innings in Wednesday's 8-0 opening win over Grinnell. She fired a complete-game three-hitter with 10 strikeouts in Friday's 3-0 Game 1 shutout over Carroll. Sernek earned the Game 2 save, working 2.2 scoreless innings in an 11-8 victory.
Sernek boosted her career strikeout total to 306, which ties Ashton Horn for second place on the program's all-time list. Jill Trzaska is the school-record holder with 327 strikeouts.
Sernek carries a 2.01 ERA on the year with four complete-game shutouts. She has fanned 78 batters in 115 innings pitched.
The Rams (21-8 overall, 8-3 MWC) host Knox (4-25, 2-9) Tuesday in a 4:30 p.m. South Division doubleheader on Senior Day. Cornell has won 10 of its last 11 contests, including five straight.
