MOUNT VERNON – Cornell's Joseph Gelfand and Joseph Reyes closed their home careers on a winning note Friday with a 6-3 men's tennis triumph over Lawrence on Senior Day.
The Rams wrapped up regular-season dual play Saturday, falling 7-2 on the road to Lake Forest. Cornell finished 10-13 overall, 1-3 in the Midwest Conference South Division under first-year head coach Carolina Hannes.
Reyes, Hiro Harada and Nolan Schillerstrom were two-time winners in the home finale against Lawrence (4-13). Reyes scored a 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 4 singles, and partnered with Ben Williamson for an 8-6 win at the No. 2 doubles position.
Harada at No. 5 (6-4, 6-2) and Schillerstrom at No. 6 (6-3, 6-4) also won their singles matches in straight sets. They took an 8-3 victory at No. 3 doubles.
Cornell received a pair of singles wins at the top of the lineup against the Foresters (13-12). Gelfand's opponent at the No. 1 spot retired early in the first set. Sophomore Thomas Weiss rolled 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2. Williamson was edged 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 at No. 3.
The Rams dropped three competitive doubles matches, including a 9-7 setback from No. 2 tandem Williamson and Reyes. Schillerstrom and Harada fell 8-6 at No. 3, Gelfand and Weiss 8-4 at No. 1.
Coming up – Cornell competes in the MWC Individual Championships next weekend (April 25-26) in Madison, Wis. The singles tournament gets underway at 8:30 a.m. Saturday. The doubles championship is Sunday.
