STORM LAKE – Senior Joseph Reyes scored a meet-clinching victory over host Buena Vista to cap a double-dual sweep Saturday for the Cornell men's tennis team
Reyes came through with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles to rally the Rams past Buena Vista, 5-4. Cornell cruised to a 7-2 win over Loras in the day's opener.
Coach Carolina Hannes' Rams improved their record to 3-4, after starting the year with three straight defeats.
Reyes paced the Rams with a perfect 4-0 record on the day. He teamed with Ben Williamson for a pair of wins at No. 2 doubles, including a key 8-6 decision in the meet with Buena Vista (3-4).
Cornell trailed the Beavers 2-1 going into singles play. The Rams received straight-set wins from Thomas Weiss at No. 2 (6-4, 6-4), Hiro Harada at No. 5 (6-4, 7-5) and Nolan Schillerstrom at No. 6 (6-1, 6-1) to go with Reyes' decisive victory.
The Rams took five of six singles matches from Loras, highlighted by Williamson's 2-6, 6-2, 10-7 comeback at the No. 3 position. Weiss, Reyes, Harada and Schillerstrom all won without surrendering a set.
Reyes and Williamson earned a 9-7 doubles win over the Duhawks. Harada and Schillerstrom rolled 8-1 at the No. 3 spot.
Coming up – The Rams are off to Florida later this week for spring-break competition. Cornell opens play March 9 with duals against The College of New Jersey and St. Scholastica, both in Orlando.
