Horan paces Cornell men during Day 1

MOUNT VERNON – Senior CJ Horan clocked a season-best time in the 5000-meter run to lead the Cornell men's scorers during the opening day at the Midwest Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships Friday in the Small Multi-Sport Center Arena.

The Rams totaled 16 points and stand seventh in the 10-team field. Monmouth is the leader with 77 points, followed by St. Norbert with 54.

Horan wound up fifth out of 24 runners in the 5000 with a mark of 15:53.87. Teammate Lawrence Dennis was eighth in 16:13.36.

Cornell scored a fifth-place finish in the 4x200 relay. The team of Preston Ritchie, Kenny Smith, Zach Nelson and Brett Baker crossed in 1:34.84, just .005 seconds behind Ripon in fourth.

Freshman Charles Zilaitis improved his best mark in the shot put (45-09.25) and placed seventh. Jacob Butts ran 4:35.84 in the mile and finished seventh. 

Thomas Guittar anchored the sprint medley relay of Nelson, Carsen Kuesel and Nobuki Harata to seventh in 3:45.21. Smith picked up a point in the high jump, clearing 6-0 for eighth.

Preston Ritchie qualified for the finals in the 60. He recorded the fifth-fastest time in 7.09.

Saturday's competition begins at 9:30 a.m. with field events. The running begins at noon.
