GALESBURG, Ill. – Cornell opened the 2014 men's tennis season Saturday with a 6-3 setback to Midwest Conference South Division foe Knox at Lakeside Tennis Center.
The Rams recorded all three victories in singles action, highlighted by sophomore Thomas Weiss' 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), 1-0 (10-7) triumph over Karl Ruzgas at the No. 2 position.
Sophomore Hiro Harada posted a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 5. Junior Nolan Schillerstrom was a 6-1, 6-4 winner at No. 6. Harada and Schillerstrom came up just short in a 9-8 (7-4) loss at No. 3 doubles.
Cornell was also competitive in 8-5 doubles losses at No. 1 (Joseph Gelfand/Thomas Weiss) and No. 2 (Joseph Reyes/Ben Williamson).
Coming up – Coach Carolina Hannes' Rams travel to Cedar Rapids next Saturday, Feb. 15, for duals against UW-La Crosse at 1 p.m. and Coe at 5 p.m. The Coe dual is worth one point in the 2013-14 Bremner Cup All-Sport Series, which is currently tied 6-6 between the rival schools.
